Valentine’s Day

To those who have read through our past blog posts, I wish I could say this will be just as witty, well written and eloquent.. but the truth is, our amazing Juls was the author of those and she/he had the audacity to leave us to attend university in Victoria for her/his writing, so you’ll just have to wait for their published works to hit the shelves! So sadly you’re stuck with me and all of my grammatical errors, bear with me though every now and then I can be kind of funny, at least my husband sometimes says I am. Which leads me into the purpose of this post, love of course and that magical holiday built around it, Valentine’s Day!

It’s a love it or leave it kind of holiday, so it’s always interesting to hear everyone’s take on it. Personally in my younger years I didn’t hold much stock in it. I always felt that I didn’t need hallmark to tell me when to show my love for someone. Now as a wife with 2 kids, I appreciate a day where it’s all about smoochie kisses and romance. Sometimes we need that reminder that this person standing next to you is the love of your life and not just your tag off partner for dirty dishes, laundry and dinner prep. It doesn’t have to be a lot, sometimes just a little something can be enough to let the other person know you were thinking about them.

I’ve been working as a florist now for 14 years and we usually have four types who walk through the door;

The Deep-Seated Romantic- this is the person who’s been planning for a while, they’ve got a handwritten poem complete with tear streaks, a set itinerary that may include a flash mob and costume changes and in some cases a ring to top it off.

The Classic - it’s not their first Valentine’s Day, they’ve got the chocolates, the flowers, the card and the dinner reservation for 7.

The Newbie - they have no idea what they’re doing, but they know it should be something…

The Miley- they don’t need anyone to buy them flowers.

No matter which group you find yourself in I figured I’d share some ideas, who knows maybe it’ll inspire you!

Well first off we are a flower shop so there is the obvious, flowers and in particular roses. Truth be told, roses do go up in price at Valentine’s Day due to demand, but they are in demand for a reason. They are the timeless option to profess your love, roses instantly makes you think of passion and romance. It’s one of the reasons some are hesitant to include roses in bouquets when they aren’t too sure about where they ‘are’ with their partner. It’s our top request on Valentine’s Day by far, but as of late we have noticed a shift to be more personalized. Let’s face it roses are not everyone’s cup of tea, instead you could have a tailored bouquet of all of your partners favourite flowers and colours. In one case we had a request for several flowers that all had a specific meaning in the relationship. If specifics sound like something you’d be keen on, it’s all about time for us, the sooner you get ahold of us and say you’d like a big bouquet of sunflowers the sooner we can preorder those with our suppliers so you can be the star! But maybe you don’t know a dang thing about flowers, that’s ok too because lucky for you, we do! Just let us know a general idea; happy, whimsical, wildflower.. we can take it from there.

Another option, if fresh flowers are not your or their thing, are forever flowers such as a dried bouquet, pressed flower art or one of our preserved flowers. Then the card can read something along the lines of… my love for you will last as long as these flowers… cause they’ll last forever you see, so clever. Not to mention how ‘in’ dried flowers and the boho aesthetic are these days.

Plants! When covid hit we saw a large increase in demand for houseplants as so many were stuck in their houses feeling pretty miserable.. this lead to a plant craze that is still a thing as people realized how awesome growing plants is! There’s a whole community of plant mommas and papas that are turning their homes into mini jungles! The great thing about having a partner that’s into plants (other than the fresh oxygen and stress reducing effects in your home) is there is never a question of what they might want; A new plant friend, pot, decoration or an adorable plant pin so they can show their love even when not at home.

Not many know that are shop also houses art from local artists. From artist cards to original paintings and some pretty naughty stickers. We also sell pottery from the talented Ciara Linteau and hand blown glass by Beth Monod, both of which you can purchase filled with beautiful blooms straight from our website if you like. Even our note cards we write your message on that go with the flowers are unique prints painted by yours truly.

The number one thing we try to accomplish is to offer something beautiful and unique, just like you and your love. and you never know what might happen if you rock up with a rose between your teeth… 😉😘

Wishing everyone all the joys that Valentines brings, maybe even twice…
